How to Protect Brain Health: Reducing Chronic Stress and Learning How to Rest Properly

What Should We Eat and Drink for Brain Health?

Many people are curious about foods or supplements that are good for brain health, but

In fact, the most important thing is the basics. Getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, exercising appropriately, and taking proper rest are the foundations of brain health.

Today, we will look at how chronic stress affects the brain, how to rest properly,

And we will also look at substances such as L-theanine and B vitamins, which are being studied in relation to brain function.

1. Short-term stress and chronic stress are different.

Stress is not always a bad thing.

When a deadline is approaching or an important event is ahead, feeling tense can temporarily increase concentration and alertness.

This kind of short-term stress can sometimes help improve performance, depending on the situation.

This process involves the body's stress response system, including cortisol.

It is important for the body to return to a stable state once the stressful situation has passed.

The real problem is chronic stress that continues for months or even years.

Chronic stress can interfere with sleep and may negatively affect mood regulation, concentration, and memory.

When the stress response continues for a long period of time, it can place a greater burden on both the brain and the body.

2. The Effects of Chronic Stress on the Brain

Chronic stress can affect the function of the prefrontal cortex, which is involved in planning, decision-making, and impulse control.

The hippocampus, which plays an important role in learning and remembering new information, is also affected by stress.

In addition, the responses of the amygdala, which processes threats and emotional reactions, may also change.

For this reason, people experiencing high levels of stress may become more sensitive to minor issues and may find it more difficult to manage anxiety and anger.

However, these changes can vary depending on the intensity and duration of stress, as well as an individual's overall health condition.

3. Having free time alone does not necessarily mean getting sufficient rest.

Have you ever spent an entire weekend lying in bed watching YouTube or playing games, only to find that you still didn’t feel refreshed?

Rest does not simply mean not working.

Getting enough sleep, eating meals regularly, staying lightly active, and making time to step away from stress are all important.

To assess how well your body has recovered after resting, pay attention to how refreshed you feel when you wake up in the morning,

You can assess factors such as daytime sleepiness, concentration, mood, and the level of physical tension in your body.

However, the quality of rest cannot be accurately judged based on just one or two indicators, such as whether you wake up without an alarm or whether your skin looks good.

4. The Relationship Between the Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC) and Rest

There is an area in the brain called the anterior cingulate cortex, or ACC (anterior cingulate cortex).

This area is involved in a variety of functions, including attention control, evaluating effort and reward, conflict processing, and emotional regulation.

When we decide whether to continue a task or put in more effort, multiple regions of the brain work together in the process.

The ability to recognize the body's internal state can also help you understand your own level of fatigue and recovery.

Activities such as meditation, breathing exercises, yoga, and Pilates, which involve paying attention to bodily sensations and breathing, can serve as a way to practice becoming more aware of your physical state.

However, it cannot be definitively concluded that any specific type of rest or training will necessarily make the ACC thicker.

5. Rest Habits You Can Practice for Brain Health

First, make sure you get enough sleep and try to go to bed and wake up at consistent times.

Second, do not skip meals and eat a balanced diet that includes protein, vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.

Third, practice light walking and engage in regular exercise.

Getting exposure to natural daylight during the day can also help maintain a healthy sleep-wake rhythm.

Fourth, set clear boundaries between work and rest.

If you put off tasks that need to be addressed for too long, short-term stress can turn into a long-term burden.

Fifth, take time for activities such as meditation or slow breathing exercises that help you observe and care for your body and mind.

6. Can L-theanine and B Vitamins Help Support Brain Health?

Green tea, black tea, oolong tea, and matcha are all made from the tea plant (Camellia sinensis).

Tea contains various compounds, including L-theanine.

L-theanine is a compound that has been studied in relation to relaxation, stress, attention, and sleep.

However, research findings vary depending on factors such as dosage, study participants, and evaluation methods,

However, taking L-theanine does not necessarily improve memory or concentration.

B vitamins, including vitamin B1, B2, B6, B12, and folate (B9), play important roles in the normal functioning of the nervous system and in energy metabolism.

A deficiency of these nutrients may lead to fatigue or problems with nervous system function.

However, even if a person already has adequate nutritional status, taking additional vitamins does not necessarily lead to improved brain function.

Dietary supplements cannot replace a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle habits.

7. Dietary Supplements Are a Means to Complement Healthy Lifestyle Habits

When choosing a product, it is important to check the actual content, nutrition facts, and recommended directions for use.

Iron, in particular, should be consumed based on whether a deficiency is present and on an individual's health condition. There is no need to take additional nutrients indiscriminately if they are not needed.

The specific effects of a product should be evaluated based on the scientific evidence for its ingredients and their actual amounts.

Rather than assuming that a specific product will improve memory or concentration, it is better to first evaluate your own nutritional status and lifestyle habits.

Ultimately, the most fundamental ways to protect brain health are to get enough sleep, eat well, stay physically active, and take proper rest.

Although it is difficult to eliminate stress completely,

Although it may be difficult to eliminate stress completely, you can develop the habit of allowing yourself time to recover after addressing the tasks you need to complete and of paying attention to your body's signals.

The busier your daily life becomes, the more important it is to make sure you set aside time for your brain and body to recover.
