When a lump appears in the body—whether in a man or a woman—the first concern is usually, “Could this be cancer?”

Fortunately, most uterine fibroids are not malignant. In other words, they are benign tumors. The probability of a fibroid being malignant is about 0.2% to 0.4%, which is very low. So even if a fibroid is found, about 99% of them are benign. Uterine fibroids are very common, and women may take them lightly, but they can cause various symptoms and even infertility, so they should not be underestimated. Both malignant and benign tumors can be influenced by lifestyle and eating habits. While congenital factors cannot be changed, acquired lifestyle habits and diet can be controlled. Generally, we can distinguish between what is good and what is harmful.

First, let’s look at the harmful factors. Uterine fibroids typically develop and grow under the influence of female hormones. Therefore, it is best to avoid health supplements that contain female hormones or substances that act like hormones in the body, such as environmental hormones.

Common supplements that contain high levels of female hormones include red ginseng, pomegranate products, and arrowroot juice. It is also advisable to avoid instant foods and processed foods.

I will explain the factors that worsen or improve uterine fibroids, focusing especially on lifestyle and eating habits. Eating habits are extremely important because they determine our nutritional intake. One of the nutrients known to help with uterine fibroids is vitamin D. There are three major racial groups in the world—Black, Asian, and White—and among them, Black women have the highest incidence of uterine fibroids.

The reason is that they have more melanin, which reduces the skin’s ability to absorb sunlight. Vitamin D is synthesized in the body through sunlight and UV exposure, and this process is less efficient in people with darker skin. Therefore, Black and Asian individuals tend to have lower natural vitamin D production, making dietary supplementation more important.

White individuals, on the other hand, absorb sunlight more easily, allowing them to synthesize more vitamin D naturally. Thus, ensuring adequate vitamin D production and intake is essential.

Among nutrients, potassium is also important. A lack of potassium can negatively affect the development and growth of uterine fibroids. Potassium is abundant in fruits and vegetables, with bananas being a representative example.

Therefore, regularly consuming fruits is important. Now, what about the harmful factors? These are widely known: alcohol, smoking, instant foods, processed foods, saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol. Recently, simple sugars that rapidly raise blood sugar are also considered harmful.

Alcohol and smoking can cause cellular mutations.

Uterine fibroids originate from abnormal changes in normal muscle cells, and alcohol and smoking can promote such changes. If someone who drinks or smokes is diagnosed with uterine fibroids, it is best to quit.

Cholesterol is the precursor substance from which estrogen is produced. When estrogen levels rise, it can affect the formation and development of uterine fibroids, so it is better to reduce cholesterol intake. Therefore, even when eating meat, it is recommended to remove as much fat as possible. Instead of red meat, it is better to choose white fish, or if you need protein, plant-based proteins such as beans. And when glucose levels become too high, it triggers various inflammatory responses in the body.

Inflammation can also cause certain cellular changes. This is considered one of the contributing factors to the development of uterine fibroids. Environmental hormones can also be encountered in daily life, and they are especially abundant in processed foods and instant foods. When these substances enter the body, they bind to estrogen receptors and act like female hormones, which can cause fibroids to grow. Therefore, it is best to eat fresh foods—fresh fruits, vegetables, and fresh meat. Processed foods, including noodles or instant ramen, as well as processed meats like ham and sausages, should be reduced as much as possible to help prevent uterine fibroids.

And what about lifestyle habits? Generally, getting good sleep, reducing stress, and doing moderate exercise — these are all lifestyle habits, right? These are also very important for uterine fibroids. Why? When we are stressed and cannot sleep well, the body releases stress hormones. When stress hormones increase, female hormones also rise. Ultimately, this negatively affects uterine fibroids. And what about moderate exercise? It helps blood circulation. Our bodies naturally develop inflammation and various issues, and what resolves these problems are the oxygen and immune cells carried in the blood. So when blood circulation improves, these cells travel throughout the body, detect problems, and correct them. The uterus is no exception. When blood circulation improves, small issues that occur there can also be resolved. Therefore, even light exercise or stretching is good, and generally, aerobic exercise is recommended. Many women have uterine fibroids, and even when they are diagnosed, many take it lightly. But in the past 20 years, cases have increased about fourfold. The rate of increase is quite fast, so it seems to be a time when women need to take better care of their uterine health. It’s not difficult. Just visit a nearby OB-GYN clinic once or twice a year for an ultrasound. With that, you can get a basic gynecological exam and check whether you have fibroids.

https://www.cho1sang.com

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[21
141,37,140,50,138,137,139,142
post-185","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-obstetrics-gynecology-specialist","tag-141","tag-37","tag-140","tag-50","tag-138","tag-137","tag-139","tag-142
["GET
